Australian-based Expertise
Downunder Advantage is an independent global sport operations and major event advisory practice based in Australia, founded by Luke Pellegrini, former Chief of Sports & Teams at the Australian Olympic Committee (2016-2024).
Luke creates a downunder advantage for his clients by combining his depth of experience working in the global sport industry (inc. leading ten Australian teams to international multi-sport Games), with his local host-city insight for upcoming major events in Australia.
I have more than 15 years experience in executive roles across the sports & major events industry. I spent 8 years at the Australian Olympic Committee, where I led the Games Operations & Sports Services department from Rio to Paris.
Prior to working in sport, I practised as a commercial litigation lawyer in Australia, learning to mitigate risks early, advocate strongly, attention to detail, and how to negotiate contracts securely.
These foundational legal skills have proved essential throughout my career, especially when responsible for leading teams across multi-year, international sport event campaigns.
Luke showcased his ability to pivot to the inevitable, but unpredictable (Zika, Bedbugs, COVID etc) major event environmental curveballs and work with Government agencies by implementing the safety countermeasures that enabled the Australian Teams safe passage to Games held during international travel bans and COVID lockdown.
CORE AREAS OF FOCUS:
Operational readiness
Moving from early planning and strategy to delivery grounded in host city reality.
Commercial and legal risk
Navigating contracts, cross-border agreements, and host-city risk exposure.
Stakeholder relationships
Managing the competing interests of governments, international teams, athletes, sports, venues, sponsors, media, and the Organising Committee.
For Australian clients, the focus is on capturing the decade long “green & gold runway” of international sporting events to be held in Australia. My experience provides clients with the clarity required to invest capital confidently, ensuring compliance with the international standards demanded by event stakeholders.
For International clients, the focus is tailoring your event strategy to our unique Australian host-city operating environment. A local’s perspective helps you overcome the cost uncertainy, inefficient missteps and time-zone lag that come with preparing a major event campaign from overseas.
By embedding local expertise in your team, client’s also gain the ability to quickly pivot operational planning to new information as it emerges, safeguarding your overall strategy from curveballs like Covid or satellite venue changes.
Australia is huge, and our major sport events always have an enormously wide spread of venues that create operational headaches for stakeholders. Downunder Advantage provides on-demand, on-ground access in Australia without you having to sit on a plane for 24 hours.
We are the sustainabile solution when you need to check out a new hotel, find a training facility, lock in an Aussie supplier, or yet another satellite village plan is required.
PROVEN GLOBAL SPORT EXPERTISE:
From 2016 to 2024, I led the delivery of Australian Teams to ten IOC-sanctioned multi-sport Games. That role required navigating complex decision-making environments across the IOC, National Olympic Committees, Organising Committees, IFs, Governments, Dignitaries, Media and Commercial partners.
This experience has built a proven track record of success delivering operational campaigns under the highest international pressure, where risk, cost, and friction typically emerge. It also allows me to anticipate likely pressure points early, from venue access and satellite operations through to changes in Village services, accreditation entitlements, and support frameworks, and help clients engage these issues before positions harden.
I bring a deep network across the major event and global sport ecosystem, and a clear-eyed understanding of how, when and by whom critical planning decisions are made, and what can be influenced versus what we have to accept.
PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY, GLOBAL CONTEXT:
Clients engage me directly. I do not delegate work to junior consultants or delivery teams, and I remain personally accountable for all advice.
My work draws on hands-on experience leading Australian Team operations across ten multi-sport Games during my tenure as Chief of Sports and Teams at the Australian Olympic Committee from Rio to Paris. That experience allows me to tailor advice to the specific realities of my home region, rather than applying basic Games templates or generic AI-research.
I understand the operational standards and expectations of international delegations travelling to a Games, having lead successful Australian campaigns in ten different host cities. I believe the key to success is to connect strategically-aligned international delegations and best-in-class local commercial partners to work together for as long as possible prior to a major sporting event. That commitment ensures the perfect high performance enviornment is ready to go, when the athletes arrive to compete on the big stage.
INDEPENDENT ADVICE
The global major sport event environment is crowded with political, institutional, and commercial interests, often pulling in different directions. Public alignment can mask private risk, delaying the communication of information that is uncomfortable but critical to good decision-making.
As an independent advisor, I operate without institutional bias or delivery conflicts. That independence allows me to focus on what actually matters, providing clear, candid advice on Games/event readiness, risk, and complex decision-making within real-world constraints.
